The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels is a proud and prestigious commission, comprised of the most respected, admirable, and philanthropic members of the community. Those who are granted the esteemed title of “Colonel” are among the most deserving individuals who carry this exclusive rank, earned from a lifetime of good works, charity, and extraordinary merit. A Kentucky Colonel is a person of uncompromised character; one who stands on immovable principle, strong conviction, with undisputed integrity. Earlier this month, one deserving and well-known local joined this revered group.
Jimmy “Pappy” Skidmore was recently granted the rank of Kentucky Colonel. On January 19th, Jimmy’s daughter Rochelle announced the news on Facebook and shared a photo of Pappy with this special certificate, signed and made official by Governor Andy Beshear and Secretary of State, Michael Adams.
There are very few who would disagree that the 91-year-old Pappy Skidmore is among the most deserving of this recognition. The humble and notable native of North Fork has lived a rich and eventful life, spending many years tending his fields and raising a lush and beautiful garden. Pappy is also a gifted angler and is widely known for his skills with a rod and reel. Additionally, Jimmy has been the proud patriarch of the Skidmore clan and has raised many kids and grandkids, including the community of young “River Rats” that live along the North Fork of the Red River.
Pappy’s accomplishments include leading a successful fight against the Red River Dam which would have flooded and destroyed many homes on the east end of Powell County and would have completely drowned our beautiful and famous Red River Gorge. Jimmy is also a world-famous Bluegrass picker and fiddle player, earning prestigious awards and setting incredible records in and around the genre. Jimmy has shared the stage with some of the most celebrated and renowned musicians to ever play Bluegrass.
In 2023 Pappy was recognized in a special ceremony at the Red River Gorge Visitor Center at Slade which officially coined Jimmy a “Living Legend” and celebrated his storied lifetime of excellence and incredible achievements.
Please join the Powell County Patriot in offering our sincerest congratulations for Pappy Skidmore on this amazing and meritorious award.
