Students at Clay City Elementary recently received a vital lesson in personal safety through a “Stranger Danger” program. The presentation was a collaborative effort between Mrs. E from the Powell County Public Library and Mrs. Jaimie from the Powell County Health Department who wore their ice cream attire to compliment the program. The program introduced students to a memorable new tool through a story and Power Point presentation for staying safe: the SCOOP acronym. Designed to be easy for children to remember in stressful situations, SCOOP breaks down safety into five actionable steps:
- S – SMART: Trust your “Uh-Oh” voice. If a situation feels wrong, it probably is.
- C – CALL LIST: Always check your approved call list before going anywhere with someone.
- O – ZERO: Practice zero talking to strangers.
- O – OUT: Keep people out of your personal bubble and personal space.
-
P – PAIR UP: Always have a buddy when navigating large or crowded places.
By the end of the session, students were equipped with the confidence to recognize potential “Uh-Oh” moments and the vocabulary to stay safe in their school and community.
