A group of sixth graders at the middle school recently explored the world of flight during the kick-off of a Red River Gorge Discovery Zone “Flight and Aerodynamics” multi-lesson program held on October 1st.
The Red River Gorge Discovery Zone (RRGDZ) is a traveling pop-up learning experience focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). Through hands-on activities and live presentations, it introduces students to the natural history and conservation of the Red River Gorge.
At Powell County Middle School, approximately twenty sixth-grade students were introduced to the topic of flight by Judy Dourson, Mary Bennett, and Jeremy Urekew. Students learned about the origins of human flight while exploring the various ways flight has changed our world and considering what could be next in the field of aviation.
The highlight of the event was a live presentation by Jeremy Urekew, an aviation rescue specialist for the Powell County Search and Rescue squad. He shared his early interest in flight, his journey to becoming a pilot, and demonstrated some equipment to the students. Students had the opportunity to explore the helmet used for flying and the harness employed on helicopters during rescue missions.
The program will continue with eleven more lessons as well as additional guest speakers.
