The Powell County Public Library is inviting local children to dig deep into imagination this season with its ongoing Summer Reading Program, themed “Unearth a Story.” Following a highly successful dinosaur hunt that kicked off the summer festivities, the library has lined up two exciting, hands-on events this week to keep young minds active and engaged.
On Wednesday, July 8th, at 10:30 a.m., children of all ages up to 12 are invited to become prospectors for a morning of gem mining at Agate Alley. This interactive experience allows participants to sift through mining rough to discover hidden treasures, connecting real-world geology with the thrill of discovery found in the pages of their favorite books.
The adventure continues Thursday, July 9th, at 1:00 p.m., with a special program tailored for children aged 7 to 12. Participants will dive into history and science through the captivating book, The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins by Barbara Kerley. The session will bring to life the true story of the 19th-century artist who built the world’s first life-sized dinosaur models, combining art, history, and paleontology into an engaging afternoon.
Both events are free to attend and offer perfect opportunities for local youth to build reading habits, explore scientific concepts, and connect with peers. Families interested in participating can find more details or register by visiting the Powell County Public Library or checking their official community calendar.
