(Ron Hamblin – Editor’s Opinion) People everywhere seem to have an issue with how much you should tip and when it is appropriate.
Some restaurants are now putting a 20% service charge on your dinner bill. Some are putting recommended tip percentages on your bill. It’s sure changed alot over the years.
This is my personal opinion and not intended to offend anyone. Just my opinion. Tipping, in my opinion was something you did for someone who did a good job when they are doing a service for you. When someone weed eats my hill, we have an agreed upon price. If they do a good job, or do a little extra, I give them a little more. Same with dining out.
I know waitress work hard. I’m not interested in hearing about they only get paid a low minimum wage. That, in and of itself, is absolutely wrong. I always tip on service. What does that mean? Well if my waiter/waitress is cordial, and checks on my table, gets my order right, is helpful, I will always tip very reasonable.
I take in a few other factors that don’t necessarily involve the waiter/waitress. One, if a restaurant tries to include a service charge, say 20% on a $100 bill, usually 3 of us dining, that is going to be the tip. BUT …….. usually, I refuse the service charge since there is absolutely no reason for it unless the business is splitting it with the cook, waiter/waitress, busboy, who ever. In either case, it’s not my job to pay part of their salaries. I will tip in cash usually around $15 – $20 on a $100 bill. NEVER tip the total bill. Find the sub total before service charges and taxes, tip accordingly. NEVER tip on top of taxes or service charges. (Remember this is my opinion only. You decide on your own how & when to tip)
