Powell County 6-5-26 Elizabeth Hughes
This spring, something special happened for the 3rd graders of Powell County. The Powell County Health Department and Powell County Public Library teamed up to launch a brand-new pilot program focused on character building.
Throughout the semester, students learned what it means to build strong character and how small choices can make a big difference in everyday life. Three important traits were highlighted during the program — kindness, self-control, and honesty.
Each month, students worked hard to practice the featured trait both in school and at home. As they demonstrated these positive behaviors, they earned a special badge to place on their sash, proudly showing their progress and commitment to becoming thoughtful and responsible leaders.
By the final session, many students had collected several badges and plenty of smiles along the way. The program wrapped up with a fun celebration featuring treats and recognition for all of the students’ hard work and dedication.
Plans are already underway to continue the program next year with even more character traits and opportunities for students to grow.
The partnership between the health department and library helped create meaningful lessons that students can carry with them for years to come — proving that kindness, honesty, and self-control are skills worth celebrating.
