The Stanton City Council voted Wednesday, May 20th, at a special called meeting, to approve a flag contest. The goal is to have a flag to represent Stanton by mid-Summer.
Boone Chaney approached the Stanton City Council about the idea in early Spring of this year. Mayor Willie Means established a committee composed of Council members Billy Rice, Mark Merriman, and Dixie Lockard.
At the meeting, Rice announced that the committee had established contest rules while Merriman read the Flag Contest rules. Forms for the flag contest may be picked up at City Hall during regular business hours or downloaded from the city’s website.
Contest rules include the following:
•
Contest open to all residents of Powell County
•
Design must be physically attached
•
The physical form must be presented at City Hall in a sealed envelope
•
The form must not be signed (submission of name will be on the outside of the envelope only)
•
Deadline for submission is June 8th at 4:00 p.m.
•
Only one submission per person
•
Each entry shall contain a narrative explanation which shall not exceed 500 words
•
All contest rules must be followed
Submission suggestions are that the Council is seeking a simple design which uses 2 or 3 basic colors. The “City of Stanton” name may be utilized in the design. While simple, the design should be distinctive from other signs.
The Flag Committee will select three designs and submit those to the Mayor for a final selection.
So, calling all vexillophiles (flag enthusiasts/hobbyists) in Powell County! Get your creative juices flowing, download or pick up an entry form and get to work.
First prize will receive $250 along with the honor of seeing your flag flying.
