Virginia Wills,
age 96, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Centerpoint Health in Winchester, Kentucky. She was born on Saturday, March 29, 1930, in Owensboro, Kentucky, to the late William Preston Nolan, Sr., and the late 
Celia Howell Nolan. Virginia was deeply committed to her community, radiating genuine passion in all her endeavors. She served as the Director of the Powell County Middle School Youth Service Center, where she dedicated herself to making a positive impact on local youth. Prior to this role, Virginia worked as a clerk at Clark Rural Electric, where her contributions improved community services. In her capacity as the Director of Kentucky River Foothills, she played a pivotal role in establishing the Powell County Senior Citizens’ Center, providing invaluable resources and support to the area’s elderly residents. Virginia’s commitment to public service extended to her tenure as a two-term City Councilwoman in Stanton, and she also served as Mayor, demonstrating her leadership and dedication to her town. She also had an entrepreneurial spirit; as she once operated a successful trucking company that transported goods across the country. Virginia’s love for the land was evident in the way she took care of her farm, nurturing it with the same dedication she showed to her community. Above all, she cherished her family, finding joy in spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even her great-great-grandchildren. Each moment shared with them was a treasure, reflecting her deep love and commitment to family values. In addition to her parents, Virginia is preceded in death by five brothers: Glen Nolan, Ralph Nolan, Berley Nolan, Willie Nolan, and William Preston Nolan, Jr.; and two sisters: Wynona Blythe and Mable Smith. She is survived by one son, Wayne Lee Abner of Hazard; one daughter, Tamra Mastin of Stanton; two sisters: Shirley (Henry, Jr.) Ashley and Judy (J.W.) Stephens, both of Stanton; four grandchildren: John Wayne Abner, Daniel Eugene (Kendra) Abner, Rebecca (Marvin) Berryman, and Justin Mastin; five great-grandchildren: Tyler (Taylor) Mastin, Taylor Berryman, Wade Mastin, Kimbrell Abner, and Kennedy Abner; and two great-great-grandchildren. Pamela Kay Roland,
age 56, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026, at her home in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. She was born on Friday, December 19, 1969, to the late Shirley Ray Holder. Pamela had dedicated many years to her role as a 
certified nursing assistant at Bourbon Heights Nursing Home, where she was known for her kindness and compassion. She currently worked at Dairy Queen in Mount Sterling, where her warm personality shone through. An avid camper, Pamela loved exploring the beautiful landscapes of Natural Bridge State Park and the serene Indian Creek. Her greatest joy came from her children; she worked hard to give them memorable experiences and loved them deeply, bursting with pride for their achievements. With her infectious laughter and bright spirit, Pamela could light up any room. A natural socializer, she had a gift for making connections and never met a stranger. Pamela’s lively energy and zest for life made her a beloved presence to all who knew her. In addition to her mother, Pamela is preceded in death by one grandson, Cashlen James Booth. Karen Lyle Caudill,
age 54, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026. She was born on Tuesday, October 19, 1971, in Winchester, Kentucky. Karen loved planting flowers and raising yellow Labrador puppies. In the evenings, she enjoyed 
watching “Wheel of Fortune” and classic Carol Burnett shows, while her afternoons were often filled with her favorite soap operas. She expressed her creativity through sewing and had a true passion for animals, adoring both cats and dogs. Known for her mischievous spirit and infectious laughter, Karen was also tender-hearted and warm. A proud graduate of Powell County’s Class of 1989, she earned an associate degree in graphic design from Austin Peay University and had a successful career as a graphic designer for International Crank Shaft and L3. Above all, Karen cherished the time spent with her family, creating special memories together. Karen is preceded in death by her mother, Iline Barnett Hoskins; one daughter, Amber Lynn Caudill; her paternal grandparents, John W. Hoskins and Marcella (Cricket) Hoskins; her maternal grandparents, Simpson Barnett and Dollie Barnett; and her stepbrother, Brent Johnson. age 76, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at U.K. Healthcare Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. He was born on Saturday, February 4, 1950, in Lawrence, Kansas, to the late Leland Eilts and the late Margaret 
Eilts. Brent was an Air Force veteran who was passionate about serving his country. Before joining the Veterans Affairs department as an ICU Registered Nurse, where he played a vital role in caring for those who served the country, he dedicated his skills and compassion as an EMT in Kansas. Brent’s passions extended beyond his professional life; he found joy in sketching, mowing the lawn, and planting vibrant flowers. He lovingly landscaped his yard, taking immense pride in the beauty of his property, and relished the simple pleasure of enjoying a good cup of coffee. Without a doubt, Brent’s number one passion was fly fishing. He spent countless hours by the water, finding peace and happiness in the rhythm of casting and catching, and enjoyed crafting his own flies. Known for his warmhearted nature, Brent had a remarkable ability to connect with everyone around him; he truly had no enemies. His compassion for others was evident, and he was always surrounded by friends, no matter where life took him. Brent was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Stanton, where he not only cherished the teachings of the Bible but also enjoyed contributing by working in the sound room during services. His loyalty and deep friendships with Don Smith, Garry Willoughby, and Ken Cude brought him much joy. Above all, Brent shared a profound love for his wife, with whom he had a unique and special connection that enriched both of their lives. Their bond was a testament to their love and commitment, and it radiated in all aspects of their life together. Wanda Ann Preece Charles,
of Jeffersonville, Kentucky, passed peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, surrounded by her family. Wanda was born August 6, 1941, in Chattaroy, West Virginia, to the late 
Tom and Elsie Hubbard Preece. She grew up in Martin County, Kentucky, on Coldwater Creek, surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins. The oldest of five children, she helped her father build their family home. Wanda graduated from Inez High School at the age of 16. She was a good student who realized the importance of an education. While studying at Pikeville College, Wanda was hired to teach at Turkey Creek Grade School. She treasured her time teaching in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky and loved seeing her students have success in life. Wanda was blessed with three children: Patricia Ann, Brian David, and Brady Lee. For many years, she raised them as a single mother, sacrificing and working hard to give them a happy childhood. They remember trips to Boonesborough Beach, going to the World’s Fair in San Antonio, and Christmases spent at their grandparents’ home in Eastern Kentucky. Wanda returned to college in the 1990’s and earned a teaching degree from Western Kentucky University. She returned to the mountains to teach middle school students at Johnson County Middle School. Wanda loved teaching and often dressed in costumes to make learning come alive for her students. She was blessed with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. If you spent a few minutes with her, you were going to hear about her grandchildren. Wanda loved going to their ballgames, track meets, and dance recitals. She enjoyed painting, writing poetry, and decorating her house. Wanda had a knack for creating beautiful spaces that looked magazine-worthy. She decorated her home for every holiday, especially Christmas. Wanda was a member of Stanton Assembly of God. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Mack Preece and Gary Preece; and one great-grandchild, Phoebe Phillips. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Rick) Creech; two sons, Brian (Andrea) Charles and Brady (Candice) Charles; two sisters, Glenna (Phil) Sammons and Betty (Ray) Biggerstaff; one sister-in-law, Barb Preece; six grandchildren: Chris Ray, Jennifer Phillips, Bradley Charles, Will Thomas Charles, Matthew (Brianna) Charles, and Alex Charles; five great-grandchildren: Johnica Ray, Olivia Howlett, Gracie Phillips, Joanna Phillips, and Mackenzi Hollon; and many nieces and nephews. Deloris Jane Rogers,
age 79, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at her home in Greenup, Kentucky. She was born on Friday, May 23, 1947, in Franklin, Ohio, to the late John D. Morris and the late Anna Morris. Deloris was a devoted 
member of Bowen First Church of God and, in the later years of her life, was actively involved at Clay City Baptist Church. She greatly valued community service and was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of AMVETS Post 67, where she served as both Vice-President and President. In her leisure time, Deloris found joy in a variety of crafts; she spent many hours crocheting intricate patterns and cross-stitching beautiful designs. Her love for word puzzles kept her mind sharp, and she eagerly looked forward to lively games of bingo. In her youth, Deloris had a passion for decorating cakes, and she cherished the moments spent socializing with friends and loved ones. Known for her outgoing nature and quick humor, she was always ready to lend a hand or offer support to anyone in need. As a dedicated homemaker, Deloris created a warm and loving environment filled with laughter and kindness. During her children’s school years, she immersed herself in the Parent-Teacher Association, where her enthusiasm and creativity shone through as she helped construct floats for the county parades. At the heart of Deloris’s life was her family, and her greatest joy came from witnessing the growth and achievements of her children and grandchildren. John Henry Moore,
age 80, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Irvine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Irvine, Kentucky. He was born on Sunday, April 7, 1946, in Campton, Kentucky, to the late Jesse Moore and the late 
Idie Elkins Moore. He was the widower of his late wife, Wanda Cockerham Moore, with whom he was married for 50 years. John was a sincere Christian and minister of the gospel, expressing his beliefs in the Pentecostal Christian faith. He absolutely, above everything, loved to squirrel hunt. He also liked to hunt rabbits and was a true mountain man at heart. When attending church and on other occasions, he took great enjoyment in singing, loving music about his savior. He enjoyed talking on the C.B. radio quite often, and he was affectionately known by the handle Blue Goose. In addition to his wife and parents, John is preceded in death by four brothers: Frank Moore, Dewey Raymond Moore, Wardie Moore, and Reed Louis Moore; three sisters: Josephine Patton, Della Patton and Mary Dickey; one grandchild, Chelsey Moore and a special friend Johnny Marlowe. He is survived by five sons: John H (April) Moore, Jr. of London, Jessie C. Moore of Stanton, Donald R. (Angie) Moore of Mt. Sterling, Frankie L. (Lola) Moore of Mt. Sterling, and Dexter W. Ilse Hedwig Kada Marcum,
age 96, widow of Jesse Leon Marcum, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026, at her home on Marcum Road in Clay City, Kentucky. Born on Tuesday, September 3, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, she was the daughter of the 
late Ernst Kraft and the late Betty Scheuring Kraft. Ilse spent her early teenage years in World War II Germany, experiencing all of the calamities associated with living in a country at war in the city of Frankfurt. After the war, she had the opportunity to meet her future husband, Jesse, while he was serving in the United States Forces occupying Germany. They were married in 1947, and Ilse came to America to start her new life on Little Hardwicks Creek in Clay City. During some portions of her life, she worked in a couple of different factories, doing everything from sewing to making shoes. Her favorite job came later in life when she worked at the Natural Bridge State Park Lodge as a cook, preparing great meals for the tourists and guests. Ilse enjoyed the hobbies of reading, crocheting, and knitting, and in her earlier life she loved to dance and, at times, play the piano. She loved to cook for her whole family, and nothing made her happier than her whole family gatherings on Sunday at her home. She loved her grandchildren deeply and took great delight in their presence. A great way to describe Ilse’s character was that she knew what she wanted in life, she knew her mind and she loved her husband and family. In addition to parents and her husband, Ilse is preceded in death by her grandson, Chester Bailey. She is survived by two sons: Roland E. Marcum and John M. (Teresa) Marcum, both of Clay City; two daughters: Sandra B.(James) Bailey and Renee Y. (Ken Howell) Marcum-Losey, also both of Clay City; four grandchildren: Dylan (Carrigan) Losey, Angela Marcum, Leslie Teal and Jessica Renee Marcum; nine great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren and one great great great grandchild. late Chessie Halsey Anderson. Mary Ann was a proud graduate of Powell County High School and furthered her education at the University of Kentucky, earning a degree in education. She dedicated her professional life to teaching, serving as a high school math instructor with the Montgomery County Board of Education. Over the span of three decades, she profoundly impacted the lives of countless students at Montgomery County High School, earning their affection and respect through her engaging teaching style and unwavering support. A devoted member of the First Christian Church of Mount Sterling, Mary Ann actively participated in the Hazelrigg Sunday School Class. She was also involved with the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, where she connected with fellow educators who shared her passion for teaching. Mary Ann had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel, exploring fascinating foreign countries and visiting all 50 states. She loved reading and was passionate about genealogy, eagerly researching her family’s history. Mary Ann’s enthusiasm for life extended to her love of Kentucky Basketball, and she enjoyed lively card games that brought family and friends together. Always meticulous and remarkably organized, she had a cheerful disposition that brightened the days of those around her. Mary Ann cherished moments spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nurturing them with love and guidance. Above all, she was a faithful and loving wife to her late husband, Charlie, embodying warmth and devotion in every facet of her life. Mary Ann’s legacy as an educator, traveler, reader, and family matriarch is a testament to her vibrant spirit and the positive influence she had on those lucky enough to know her. Betty Ruth Roberts,
age 89, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Centerpoint Health in Winchester, Kentucky. She was born on Monday, August 3, 1936, in Lee County, Kentucky, to the late Lennox Brewer and the late Sadie Centers 
Brewer. Betty was a wonderful mother and homemaker who created a loving home for her family. She would pick beans from the garden that her husband tended and took great pleasure in canning the produce. Betty loved preparing special meals, often making some of her family’s favorites, such as poke stalks, mashed potatoes, pickled corn, chocolate pie, and every Wednesday, a batch of her famous soup beans. She enjoyed watching hummingbirds and had a fondness for collecting duck figurines. With her delightful and contagious laugh, Betty radiated joy to those around her. She was dedicated to her Christian faith and faithfully attended Morris Creek Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by five brothers: Woodrow Brewer, Edward Brewer, Ola Brewer, William Denvil Brewer, and Orbie Brewer; and four sisters: Lorena Byrd, Gaythel Lowe, Opal Compton, and Viola Treadway. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Sherman Roberts of Stanton; three sons: Glendale Ray (Pam) Roberts of Florence, Bobby Lee (Vickie) Roberts of Veronia, and Tony Sherman Roberts of Boston, Massachusetts; two daughters: Pamela (David) Jones and Sherry (David) Traugott, both of Stanton; one brother: Paul Winfred Brewer; one sister: Christina Derickson; fourteen grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Gregory Willis Jones,
age 57, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Centerpoint Health in Winchester, Kentucky. He was born on Tuesday, February 18, 1969, in Winchester, Kentucky, to the late John Paul Jones and Glenda Carroll Jones. 
Greg worked as a Mold Technician at Infiltrators Water Technology, where he demonstrated dedication and applied his skills. He was a proud member of the Stanton Masonic Lodge #352 and Stafford Lodge #562. Greg was also affiliated with the York Rite Masonic Bodies Red River Chapter #191, Red River Council #UD, Winchester Chapter #12, Winchester Council #75, and Winchester Commandery #30. Additionally, he was affiliated with the Scottish Rite Valley of Lexington, Lexington Consistory #4. In his free time, Greg thrived in the great outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, and racing four-wheelers in his younger days. He was a skilled carpenter who took pride in building projects that showcased his craftsmanship. Known for his humor, Greg loved making others laugh and, above all, cherished time with his family, creating joyful and lasting memories. In addition to his father, Greg is preceded in death by his son, Daniel Shane Jones. Verna Mae Knox,
age 84, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, May 28, 2026, surrounded by her family in Clay City, Ky. She was born June 27, 1941, in Powell County to the late James and Letha Mae (Rogers) Tipton. In addition to her 
parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Garrett Tipton, Raymond Tipton, Cecil Tipton, Sherdon Tipton, Herdon Tipton, Wilgus Tipton, Odean Tipton, Roger Tipton, Denvil Tipton and sisters Athena Townsend, Thelma Boyd, and Louise Townsend. She is survived by her children, Bobby (Kim) Knox, Kendall (Adria Crowe) Knox, and Patricia Knox; grandchildren, Amy (Donnie) Baker, Rebecca (Michael) Helton, Amanda (Jordan) Jester, Savannah (Joe) Snowden, Kyle (Marlee) Knox, Will Winburn and Wesley (Jessie) Winburn; and a host of grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She is also survived by a brother Doc (Mary) Tipton and a sister LaDonna (Doug) Hood. Mae was a member of Goff’s Corner Church of God. She enjoyed serving and fellowshipping with her church family. In years past, Mae enjoyed planning church dinners, helping to clean the church and singing in the choir. She was a true servant of our Lord. Family was everything to Mae and she truly cherished every moment spent with them. She always looked forward to planning the next family reunion or family dinner. She was supportive and helped all of them in any way she could. She expressed her love for her family through every hug, every kind word, and every thoughtful action. No one could question the deep love she had for them. Mae was meticulous in every aspect of her life. She took great pride in her home and flower gardens, dedicating hours to keeping them beautiful and well cared for. Mae was a shining example of kindness, strength, and grace to all who knew and loved her. Robert Lynn Roe,
age 80, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at his home in Clay City, Kentucky. He was born on Sunday, April 14, 1946, in Lexington, Kentucky, to the late Richard Roe and the late Lorraine Jackson Roe. Robert was an experienced truck driver who dedicated his career to the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, where his reliability 
and skill behind the wheel were well-known. For a decade, he also put in hard work at Camargo Salvage Yard, showcasing his exceptional mechanical abilities. Outside of work, Robert had a deep passion for fishing, often crafting his own lures to enhance his fishing trips. He found joy in the thrill of dirt track racing, driving his race car for over ten years, where he relished the adrenaline of competition. Known for his jolly demeanor, Robert had a knack for humor and light-heartedness, often bringing laughter to those around him. He was a devoted Kentucky Wildcats fan, passionately cheering for his team. His support extended beyond sports; he enthusiastically encouraged his children in all their athletic endeavors, always present at their games and practices. As a talented mechanic, Robert enjoyed tinkering with cars, taking pride in fixing and customizing them. He was also known for his wisdom, offering thoughtful advice to friends and family, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. In addition to his parents, Robert is preceded in death by his sister, Frances Elaine Baker, and two brothers-in-law, Carl Raymond Baker and Rondal Davis. age 78, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. He was born on Sunday, January 4, 1948, in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, to the late Harding D. Abner and the late Helen 
Stokley Abner. Billy served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict, demonstrating a commitment to service that would shape his character for years to come. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Technology from Morehead State University, which laid the foundation for his professional journey. With a Master HVAC License in hand, Billy embarked on his career in the energy sector, beginning his tenure at East Kentucky Power in the fall of 1973. He started as a Sub Station Power Plant Operator, where he honed his skills and knowledge. Over the next 34 years, he evolved within the company, transitioning from dispatching roles to ultimately serving in marketing until his retirement in 2007. In addition to his career, Billy was a dedicated entrepreneur, owning Abner’s Motel in Stanton and Lil’ Abner’s Motel in Slade, Kentucky, for three decades. His contributions to the community were numerous and impactful. He was recognized for his achievements as a member of the Powell County High School Basketball Hall of Fame, celebrating his athletic accomplishments and love for the sport. Billy played an integral role in various local organizations; he was a devoted Board Member and former President of the Beechfork Golf Course and a long-time member of the Powell County Tourism Commission. His leadership extended to the broader hospitality industry as he served as a past President of the Kentucky Hotel and Lodging Association and was the Chairman of the Stanton Motel and Hotel Association. A passionate supporter of youth athletics, Billy devoted much of his time to coaching basketball at both youth and high school levels, inspiring the next generation of players. A lover of golf, he could often be found on the course, enjoying the camaraderie it offered. Community-minded and generous, Billy always aimed to give more than he took, embodying the spirit of service and connection. Known for his warm demeanor, he never met a stranger, making friends wherever he went and leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. Billy is survived by his wife, Lois Abner; one son, Chad (Davida) Abner; one daughter, Casey Abner; and one granddaughter, Cacia Rose, all of Winchester. Phyllis Von Center,
age 89, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at her home in Cleveland, Tennessee. She was born on 
Wednesday, March 10, 1937, in Powell County, Kentucky, to the late Walker Lane and the late Ida Belle Fryar Lane, the fourteenth of sixteen children. Phyllis, a devoted mother, was married in 1953 at the age of 16. Throughout the years, she poured her heart and soul into raising her two children, instilling in them values of love and resilience. In 1969, the family embarked on a new chapter by moving to Ohio, where she began laying the foundation for a life filled with purpose. In 1984, after her husband retired, they made the significant step of relocating to Cleveland, Tennessee. In Cleveland, Phyllis found fulfillment in her role as a manager at the Life Care Center. Her warmth and compassion shone through in her work, where she was known for her dedication to both her job and the residents she served. Family was at the heart of her life. Phyllis was a remarkable woman who made countless sacrifices, always striving to create a nurturing and supportive environment for her loved ones. Her desire for a better life for her children fueled her efforts and reinforced her commitment to their happiness. The church played a central role in her life. As an active member of the Stanton Assembly of God, Phyllis found joy in engaging with the community, often volunteering to drive others to the hospital or doctors’ appointments. Her passion for helping those in need was evident in her involvement with church visitation, where she brought comfort and support to others. Her commitment to God continued in Cleveland, Tennessee, as a member of Hopewell Church of God, where she worked in benevolent ministry, demonstrating her strong faith in action. Phyllis had an outgoing personality and a gift for conversation, which made her a beloved figure among her family and friends. She was not only a joyful spirit but also a grounding presence, ensuring that her family remained connected and supported through life’s ups and downs. In addition to parents, Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Charles Edward Center, Sr., one son, Charles Edward Center, Jr.; seven brothers; and eight sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Randy) Wilkins of Cleveland, Tennessee; and three grandchildren: Wayne Alan Wilkins and Cody Center, both of Tennessee, and Clay Center, of Alabama.
