There is an old song that went something like this, “Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.” That is probably true to a sense because very few people are wanting to die because we hate to leave our family and friends behind. Since I have been in the ministry, I have come to realize that the only people that have a desire to die are the ones that are Christians and want to go to heaven. My dad was sick for ten years and the last time he had to go to the hospital he was so tired of being sick that he told my wife that he wanted to go home. She asked him, “Do you want to go to Clay City?” He said, “no, I want to go home.” He was ready to go see Jesus.
It is comforting to know that your family member or a friend is ready to go to heaven. It is also sad to know that a person never accepted Christ as their Savior and are most likely on the road to hell. I know that is hard core preaching but folks it is the truth whether we like it or not.
This is a subject that a lot of preachers shy away from. People just don’t like to hear that they might go to hell if they don’t change their ways and when the preacher starts talking about the subject, they seem offended. It’s not a new subject since it is mentioned several times in the Old Testament, Daniel 12:2 and Isaiah 14:15 and several places in the New Testament, such as Luke 16:33.
The fact is that we all have a longing to go home but some harden their hearts and won’t swallow their pride enough to admit they need Jesus in their life. I have heard all kinds of smart alec remarks about going to hell such as, “I may go to hell, but I will have a lot of friends there,” They just don’t realize that if they go to hell they won’t feel like having a party. The story in Luke 16:19: There was a certain rich man, V 22 the rich man died, and was buried, V23 And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, V 24 And he cried and said, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame.”
Friends, if that alone doesn’t give you a reason to desire to go to heaven then you better read that again and again until you realize it is no picnic. And I do hope that everyone goes to heaven, but the truth still remains that on any given Sunday there is about 15% in church and 85% never darken the door. Until next week, may God bless and keep you. If you would like to get in touch with me, text/ call 606-481-0444.
